You need Claws Mail version 3.4.0 or later to be able to use this theme. Do not attempt to use it with older versions, it’s useless.

To install the theme,, unpack it under your ~/.claws-mail/themes/ directory (create it if doesn’t exist). Then, from Claws, go to Configuration/Preferences/Themes. You should find “Tango” available in the theme selector on the right. Select it and press the “Use this” button below. Please note that some icons won’t change until you restart Claws.

2. Changelog

Version 1.1 adds 3 icons that appeared in Claws Mail 3.5.0 (cancel.png, delete_btn.png and mail_reply_to_list.png).

3. Background

Version 3.4.0 of the excellent email client Claws Mail finally added a feature I’ve long been waiting for: ability to use PNG icons in its interface (it was using XPM previously — yuck).

I’ve taken advantage of this feature and promptly started putting together a Tango icon theme. In all fairness, there have been many previous attempts but the nature of XPM files being what it is (indexed palette and no true alpha-transparency) they’ve had mixed results.

In short, nobody was crazy enough to hand-carve almost 160 PNG icons into XPM icons. Adapting the alpha-transparency to simple transparency would require manual pixel-pushing for each and every icon.

But now that Claws Mail supports PNG’s natively the task is somewhat simpler. I saw “somewhat”, not perfectly simple, because the Tango Project cannot possibly provide perfect matches for all the icons that Claws needs. So work is still needed to make that happen.

I’ve taken great care to maintain the Tango look&feel and to make the icons’ meanings clear and easy to use. I hope you’ll enjoy using this theme.
